FAQ

  • Vivinal® GOS is an ingredient rich in galacto-oligosaccharides. The galacto-oligosaccharides in Vivinal® GOS are hardly digested by the body and they reach the large intestine intact 4. Several scientific studies show that these galacto-oligosaccharides support the growth of beneficial bacteria 10-21 Any potential benefit for consumers should not be considered a health claim, but may be used in the development of potential health claims in strict compliance with local legal requirements.
Several strains of bacteria live in the colon. They can be divided into bacteria that are known or believed to be health supporting (e.g. Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli) or bacteria that might become harmful (e.g. Clostridia) 22. The galacto-oligosaccharides in Vivinal® GOS are fermented by mainly Bifidobacteria 10-12. Besides this well-known bifidogenic effect, GOS can have the following benefits: contribution to softer and more frequent stools 10,12,14,17,21,36-40, improvement of mineral absorption  42-45, and contribution to natural defences 24-28. Any potential benefit for consumers should not be considered a health claim, but may be used in the development of potential health claims in strict compliance with local legal requirements.
The definition dietary fibre varies throughout the world and should be checked with the regulatory authority for the region in question. In Europe, 69% of the GOS fraction can be declared as fibre.
There are several scientific studies available for review. You can find these in our Library. Please contact us if you would like to receive more information on these studies.

  • Vivinal® GOS Powder Maltodextrin is mixed in the wet phase out of 50% maltodextrin and 50% Vivinal® GOS on dry matter base. Yes, you can consider 50% maltodextrin and 50% Vivinal® GOS on an “as is” basis in the Vivinal® GOS powder maltodextrin. The same stands for Vivinal® GOS Powder WPC.
Our primary focus at FrieslandCampina Domo is infant and toddler nutrition. We do not have sufficient experience with Vivinal® GOS applied in food products or dietary supplements to advise our customers. We may possibly be able to offer Vivinal® GOS for these applications in the future.
Vivinal® GOS Syrup is very stable under low pH conditions as well as at high temperatures. Heat treatment and storage at low pH will not affect Vivinal® GOS. It will retain its content of galacto-oligosaccharides, its taste and appearance, while other commercially available oligosaccharides, such as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) will degrade under these conditions.
The shelf life of Vivinal® GOS products is 18 months if stored under proper conditions.
Vivinal® GOS syrup is packed in 1000 litre industrial bulk containers (IBC's), which contain 1200 kg of product. Bulk deliveries are also possible. Vivinal® GOS Powder, Vivinal® GOS Powder WPC and Vivinal® GOS Powder Maltodextrin are powdered products, packed in 25 kg bags.
Unlike some other oligosaccharides, Vivinal® GOS syrup is very stable under low pH conditions and high temperatures. Pasteurization, sterilization and storage even at low pH will not affect Vivinal® GOS. The content of galacto-oligosaccharides will remain similar; subsequently benefits are preserved throughout shelf life of the end product.
Human studies have shown that 1-15 grams of GOS per day stimulates the growth of Bifidobacteria 15, 47,48, 49. Most studies have been carried out with 2.5-10 grams of GOS per day 10,11,37,40.
Vivinal® GOS can be used in a variety of products. It has excellent heat and acid stability and is a well-known ingredient often used in infant nutrition. FrieslandCampina Domo primarily focuses on applying Vivinal® GOS in infant and toddler nutrition.
  • Vivinal® GOS is generally safe to use for both children and adults. A wide number of studies have been carried out in order to demonstrate the safety of Vivinal® GOS. Vivinal® GOS received GRAS status (link)in the USA. GRAS is an acronym for the phrase ‘Generally Recommended As Safe’. By providing this statement the FDA in the US approves that the ingredient has been shown to be safe under conditions of its intended use.
Vivinal® GOS can be used as an ingredient in many geographical areas, including all member states of the EU. Vivinal GOS received GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) approval for use in food and infant food in the USA in 2008, 2014. We always recommend that manufacturers check the status of this ingredient for the geographic area in question with the relevant local regulatory authority.

  • Vivinal® GOS originates from a dairy source. It is derived from lactose, which consists of the monosaccharides glucose and galactose. These monosaccharides can be found in human milk and they are part of the oligosaccharide structures present in breast milk. Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are derived from chicory root and are of vegetable origin. Fructo-oligosaccharides consist of the monosaccharides fructose and glucose. The monomer fructose is not present in human milk.

  • The scientific definition of prebiotics is: non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon. Source: Gibson, G.R. and Roberfroid, M.B., “Dietary Modulation of the Human Colonic Microbiota: Introducing the Concept of  Prebiotics,” Journal of Nutrition, 125: 1401-1412 (1995).
Probiotics are the living bacteria, like Bifidobacteria that deliver a health benefit to the host.
Probiotics are actually the living organisms, like Bifidobacteria. In contrast, a prebiotic ingredient such as GOS provides food for the growth of these beneficial bacteria, so they can do their job and ultimately help your body help itself by optimizing natural processes.
