What is Vivinal GOS?

Vivinal GOS is a prebiotic ingredient rich in galacto-oligosaccharides. The galacto-oligosaccharides in Vivinal GOS are not digested by the body and they reach the colon intact. These galacto-oligosaccharides stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria in the colon, providing several health benefits.

What are the benefits of Vivinal GOS?

Several strains of bacteria live in the colon, both good and bad ones. The galacto-oligosaccharides in Vivinal GOS are food for the good bacteria. The good bacteria grow faster and therefore the bad bacteria in your colon decrease. This provides a number of health benefits such as relief of constipation, support of natural defences, growth of bifido bacteria and improved mineral absorption.

Is Vivinal GOS a fibre?

The definition of what is a fibre varies throughout the world and should be checked with the regulatory authority for the particular region in question.

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host, by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus attempt to improve host health.

What are synbiotics?

A synbiotic is a supplement that contains both a prebiotic and a probiotic that work together to improve the “friendly flora” of the human intestine.

What is the difference between pre- and probiotica?

Probiotics are "friendly" or beneficial bacteria like bifido bacteria. Prebiotics are non digestible carbohydrates that function as food for the "friendly" bacteria in the colon.

What is the difference between Vivinal GOS and FOS?

Vivinal GOS is derived from a dairy source, it is derived from milk sugar and consists of the monosaccharides glucose and galactose. Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are derived from chicory root and are of vegetable origin. Fructo-oligosaccharides consists of the monosaccharides fructose and glucose.

What is the difference between Vivinal GOS and Inulin?

Vivinal GOS is derived from a dairy source, it is derived from milk sugar and consists of the monosaccharides glucose and galactose. Inulin is derived from chicory root and is of vegetable origin. Inulin consists of the monosaccharides fructose and glucose.

How stable is Vivinal GOS?

Unlike some other prebiotics, Vivinal GOS syrup is very stable under low pH conditions and high temperatures. Pasteurization, sterilization and storage even at low pH will not affect Vivinal GOS. The content of galacto-oligosaccharides will remain the same, subsequently benefits are preserved throughout shelf life of the end product.

What kinds of Vivinal GOS are available?

Vivinal GOS is available in syrup and powder forms.

What are the differences between Vivinal GOS / GOS 10 / GOS 15?

Vivinal GOS is a syrup. Vivinal GOS 10 is a co-spray dried product of WPC and Vivinal GOS. Vivinal GOS 15 is a co-spray dried product of Vivinal GOS and maltodextrin.

What dosage of prebiotic (Vivinal GOS) is effective?

Human studies have shown that 1-15 grams of GOS per day stimulates the growth of bifidobacteria. Most studies have been carried out with 2.5-10 grams of GOS per day.
Friesland Foods Domo advices a dosage of 5 grams a day.

Is Vivinal GOS safe to use for children and adults?

Vivinal GOS is safe to use for children and adults. A wide number of studies have been carried out in order to demonstrate the safety of Vivinal GOS.

In what products can Vivinal GOS be used?

Vivinal GOS can be used in a variety of different products. It is currently a well known ingredient in infant food and growing up milk. Because of its excellent heat and acid stability many other applications as dairy, beverages, and bakery can utilize Vivinal GOS and its benefits.

What is the legal status of Vivinal GOS use?

Vivinal GOS can be used as an ingredient in many geographical areas, including all member states of the EU. Vivinal GOS has been notified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) to the FDA in the USA. The FDA has issued it's response with no further questions as to the GRAS determination. We always recommend that food producers check the status of this ingredient for the geographical area in question with the relevant regulatory authority.

What is GRAS?

GRAS means Generally Recognized As Safe for use in foods. Vivinal GOS has been notified to the FDA in the USA as GRAS. We have received a response from the FDA that they have no questions on our GRAS determination for this ingredient.

What types of claims can be used for Vivinal GOS?

How is Vivinal GOS packaged?

Vivinal GOS syrup is packed in 1000 liters industrial bulk containers (IBC's), which contains 1200 kg of product. Vivinal GOS 10 and Vivinal GOS 15 are powdered products and packed in 25 kg bags.
